"This coffee comes from Terry Farm, a farmer partnership program run by PT. Jingki Roda Gayo.
Located in the highlands of Gayo, in Bener Meriah, in the province of Aceh in Indonesia, these plantations thrive at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,600 meters.
The region's fertile volcanic soil and cool tropical climate provide ideal conditions for growing high-quality Arabica coffee. The coffee trees are shade-grown, hand-picked, and cared for using environmentally friendly farming practices, including the use of organic compost made from coffee waste.
After harvesting, the fresh coffee cherries are immediately processed. The first step is sorting by flotation ("rimbang"), a method that separates ripe red cherries from green or defective cherries by immersing them in water.
This traditional, but effective technique ensures that only dense and perfectly ripe cherries move on to the next stage.
All post-harvest activities are systematically coordinated and controlled to maintain freshness, stable moisture levels and consistent grain quality.
The Gayo coffee region in Aceh, Indonesia, is renowned for producing some of the world's finest Arabica coffees. Its history dates back to the early 20th century, when the Dutch colonial administration introduced Arabica plants to the Gayo highlands around 1908.
Gayo coffee is primarily grown in three districts: Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Lues. The combination of fertile volcanic soil, rolling hills, cool temperatures, and regular rainfall creates an ideal terroir for high-quality Arabica coffee.
After the colonial period, small farmers continued the coffee-growing tradition, adopting sustainable shade-grown cultivation. For the inhabitants of Gayo, coffee is essential to community life; it sustains almost every household and is deeply rooted in their cultural identity."
