From September:
"This is our fourth season working with the various producers that make up La Muralla. This field blend is a combination of Pink Bourbon, Colombia, Castillo, and Geisha varietals, resulting in a complex yet balanced profile.
In the cup we taste ripe cherry, grapefruit, pink Starbursts, key lime, and bright tangerines. This coffee has a balanced acidity with a silky mouthfeel and long citric finish.
Producer
La Muralla is an informal group of young producers in one of Huila’s southernmost municipalities, San Agustin. Most of these producers are unable to harvest enough of one varietal individually to distribute. Creating a field blend from multiple varietals within the same region gives these producers an opportunity to share their coffees all over the world. On average, this is the youngest group of producers with home we are partnered with. With that youth comes the energy and passion for producing incredible specialty coffee.
Variety
This field blend is a combination of Pink Bourbon, Castillo, Colombia, and Geisha varietals. Pink Bourbon is a variety primarily grown in Huila, Colombia. Though newer than other varietals, it has quickly grown in popularity for its bright, sweet and aromatic profiles. It is now known to be an Ethiopian Landrace. Castillo is a hybrid variety. It is a cross between Caturra and Timor, carefully created for its resistance to leaf rust. Castillo now makes up 40% of Colombia’s coffee crops. It is a dwarfed tree that can be planted in high density, resulting in generous crop yields. Geisha was originally collected from coffee forests in Ethiopia in the 1930s. It was then sent to a research station in Tanzania and brought to Central America in 1953. This varietal is well-known for its delicate florals and stone fruit aromas."
